Alertness is the first step toward survival.

Unknown

According to official reports, the 2018 eruption of Volcán de Fuego in Guatemala claimed over 100 lives, with nearly 200 people reported missing. Many of these tragedies were linked to delayed or insufficient alerts, as evacuation warnings were sometimes issued only after the lava and pyroclastic flows had already reached populated areas.

Timely alerts are crucial for protecting communities from volcanic hazards, yet the gaps in communication and preparedness continue to put lives at risk. Early warning systems not only save lives but also reduce injuries and property loss, giving residents the critical time needed to make informed decisions and seek safety.

Ensuring that alerts reach people quickly and clearly is therefore a vital part of safeguarding both physical and community well-being in high-risk regions like Guatemala.

Our
Story

The Volcano Sentinel Project is a community-centered alert and monitoring system designed to improve safety and preparedness in regions prone to volcanic activity. By combining real-time data collection from seismic sensors, gas detectors, and satellite imagery, the project provides timely alerts to residents, local authorities, and emergency services. Its goal is to reduce casualties and property damage by ensuring that people have enough advance warning to evacuate or take protective measures. Beyond alerts, the project emphasizes education and awareness, equipping communities with knowledge about volcanic hazards, safe evacuation routes, and emergency procedures. By integrating technology with local engagement, the Volcano Sentinel Project transforms raw data into actionable information, empowering individuals and communities to respond effectively when volcanic threats arise.
